Galvanising at the Paris end
In this high rise part of town, architecture at street
level often creates a lasting impression.
 As part of a recent upgrade at the Rydges Melbourne
Hotel, the Sydney office of May + Swan Architects, redesigned
the CBD restaurant adjacent to the hotel lobby with aesthetics,
appropriate to purpose, a priority.
In achieving this, the substance and clean lines of
the zinc metals used, provide a dignified and imposing
link with the top end of town.
Design Architect Robert May, points out that appearance
was the prime reason for the use of solid zinc sheet
cladding and hot dip galvanized structures, although
the durable surfaces and freedom from maintenance prequalified
the material during concept considerations.
Design requirement included: intensive pedestrian wear,
traffic fumes and the non stop city activity which would
challenge the life of many materials.
In this instance longevity, economic efficiency and
a distinguished identity have been well combined.
