Karratha
Airport's forecourt structure

With the imminent commissioning of the new Terminal
at Karratha Airport, the Shire of Roebourne commissioned
Perth sculptor, Len Zuks, to create a centrepiece for
the airport forecourt.
The brief to the artist does not seem to have imposed
any limitations although the history and heritage of
the north-west of Western Australia undoubtedly demanded
that Len's resulting creation should reflect something
of the local area.
The recently installed, larger than life group, includes
an aboriginal figure, which Len Zuks calls the storyteller,
seated in the dust telling his story and surrounded by
kangaroos, an emu, frogs and a goanna with a backdrop
of distinctive local stones.
Len fabricated his animal collection in steel in his
Perth studio and then delivered them to a Perth galvanizing
facility where they were hot dip galvanized preparatory
to the long trip north for installation at the new
Airport.
The larger than life sized sculpture group has quickly
taken on an added coat of red Karratha dust which has
given it an even closer association with the local
landscape and its colour.
Len, who numbers twenty five years as an artist, although
until recently he worked as a technician in the Physics
Department of the University of Western Australia, said
that the animals came from his mind. "It has been
my biggest commission so far and I was delighted that
I could use my style and create something that has been
widely accepted".
